We have been speaking to Bradford City fan Dan Carter about our recent loan signing of Shay McCartan.
Shay McCartan has made an immediate impact for the Imps with his great goal against Boston United. He clearly looks a classy player and it is another example of the Cowley’s having an eye for talent.
Here is what Dan had to say
1- So, now that Shay McCarten is an Imp, what was your initial reaction to his departure?
“I think it’s a good move for both clubs.
Shay needs minutes and it hasn’t quite worked out for him in League One. There’s no doubt the guy has talent but he’s not really shown it often enough”.
McCarten has struggled for consistent minutes at Bradford, and he has had plenty of opportunities as he made 24 total league appearances last season.
2- We have already seem glimpses of his ability in our pre-season game against Boston United with his expertly placed lob, can we expect more of the same from him?
“He’s a player that has lots of composure and is good on the ball so I wouldn’t be surprised but he’s not shown enough at Bradford.
He scored four goals last season and disappointed on the most part”.
Clearly McCarten has ability, but he has struggled in League One. He had some sucessful season with Accrington Stanley in League Two, so maybe that is his ceiling at this current stage in his career.
3- Some would say it is a bit of a surprising move for McCarten given the substantial time he got for Bradford last season, why do you think he has been allowed to go out on loan?
“The guy needs minutes to increase his confidence.
He got numerous chances to make his mark on the team but rarely took them. [McCarten] scored two in two games around Christmas time last season and as a result started the next three games – we lost all three and he didn’t score in any of them”.
4- There is a re-call option in his contract, if he is to perform well at Lincoln could you see him returning to Valley Parade?
“I wouldn’t be surprised. I think it depends on how we are performing and whether we lose Charlie Wyke in either this window or [in] January.
If we are struggling and he is banging in the goals then it makes sense for him to come back”.
5- He comes across as quite a versatile player, where do you think he is most effective?
“He works well as a number 10 (in the hole).
He’s quick and gets into good positions. He also likes getting the ball to feet and either taking a man on or feeding the ball through.
I can see him working nicely if Akinde is playing on the last line of defence. Furthermore, you might have seen from YouTube that he is very good at free-kicks but he literally never showed that at Bradford – but he scored like six or seven in the previous season for Accrington”.
I for one am very excited to see what McCarten can do for us this season.
Things have maybe not gone to plan for the 24-year old at Bradford, but he could thrive at Lincoln City, and as Dan mentioned earlier he could strike up a good partnership wit John Akinde.
Big thanks to Dan for taking the time to answer our questions.
